Diwali Vastu 2026: Lakshmi-Ganesh Placement, Diya Direction, Rangoli and Entrance Tips

The week before Diwali is a strange mix of joy and frantic rearranging. The sofa gets pushed aside, the old boxes come out of the loft, and someone inevitably asks: wait, which way should Lakshmi face? Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian system of home design, has guidance for exactly this, and much of it is simple.

The most common Diwali Vastu tips are to deep-clean and declutter, place the Lakshmi-Ganesh idols in the north-east (or east or north) corner on a raised platform, light the first diya in the north-east, and keep the main entrance bright, clean and welcoming. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, with the Delhi Lakshmi Puja muhurat from 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM. Here is how to set up your home.

Start With Cleaning and Decluttering

Nearly every Diwali Vastu guide begins here. Clean the whole home, and pay special attention to the north-east corner, which is traditionally linked with divine energy and should be kept spotless and clear. Remove broken or unused items, fix leaking taps and dead bulbs, and brighten any dark corners. Many Vastu guides also suggest keeping cash and valuables in a clean cupboard or locker that opens towards the north, the direction associated with Kubera, the god of wealth.

Beyond Vastu, a tidy, well-lit home simply feels better to welcome guests and family into.

Where to Place Lakshmi and Ganesha as per Vastu

Direction - Most Vastu sources recommend the north-east (Ishan) corner of the home or puja room, followed by the east or north. Sources differ on which way the idols themselves should face. Many say Lakshmi should face east or north, while others set the idols facing west so the devotee faces east. In either case, the aim is for you to face east or north while praying. Follow your family's established setup if you have one.

Which side? From where you sit for puja, Ganesha is placed on your left and Lakshmi on your right, which is the more common arrangement. A smaller tradition places Lakshmi on the left, so this too varies. If Saraswati is included, the usual order is Ganesha, Lakshmi in the centre, then Saraswati.

How to set them up:

- Seat the idols on a raised platform, never directly on the floor, covered with a red or yellow cloth

- Install them after cleaning the home, during the Lakshmi Puja muhurat on Diwali evening

- Offer flowers, coins and sweets, and light a diya beside them

- What to avoid: Bedrooms, bathrooms, garages, spots below a staircase, and the south direction. The idols also shouldn't directly face the main door or a window. Use the HiAstro Panchang to confirm your own city's muhurat.

Diya Direction on Diwali: Where to Light the First Lamp

One widely shared guideline is to light the first diya in the north-east, then place others in the north and south-east, so that every corner of the home is lit. Many families also place a pair of diyas symmetrically at the main entrance. Place diyas on stable surfaces, away from curtains and decor, and keep children and pets at a safe distance. A diya placed with care matters more than one placed in exactly the "right" spot.

Rangoli and Entrance Vastu Tips

The entrance is considered the gateway through which Lakshmi arrives, so it gets particular attention. Vastu sources generally rank north, east and north-east as the most auspicious directions for a main door. If yours faces another way, there's no need to worry, since these suggestions are meant as guidance, not rules.

A short entrance checklist:

Rangoli: A neat, bright rangoli at the threshold, with flower petals or natural colours, welcomes guests and the Goddess alike

Toran: A fresh marigold or mango-leaf toran across the top of the door frame

Swastik: A swastik on the door is a classic auspicious symbol

Lakshmi charan: Footprints at the threshold, with the footprints facing inward

Ganesha: An idol beside the entrance, facing inward

Nameplate and lighting: A clean, well-lit nameplate and a warm light at the door

Keep it clear: Move shoe racks, dustbins and clutter away from the doorway

Don't overload the entrance. A toran, a rangoli and a pair of diyas arranged with some symmetry usually looks and feels better than a crowded doorway.

Diwali Vastu for Flats, Small Homes and Homes Abroad

Not every home has a north-east corner or a separate puja room, and that's perfectly fine. A few practical adjustments:

- Use a compass app on your phone to find north-east, and choose a clean shelf or small platform there

- Use LED or battery diyas if fire safety rules restrict open flames in your building, or light a single real diya under supervision

- Try flower-petal rangoli or a rangoli mat if you can't use colours at a shared entrance

- If no corner suits, simply choose a calm, clean, elevated spot facing east or north

- For homes abroad, use your local sunset and local time for the puja, and focus on the spirit of the setup.

A Balanced Note on Vastu

Vastu Shastra is a traditional design system, and its claims about wealth and luck haven't been tested scientifically. Many of its everyday suggestions, such as cleaning, decluttering, good lighting and fire-safe diyas, are sensible whatever one believes. There's no need to knock down walls or spend money on costly "fixes" for Diwali. If your layout can't match the guidance, a tidy, peaceful home and sincere prayer matter far more.

Personalise Your Diwali

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which direction should Lakshmi face on Diwali?

Most Vastu sources suggest the idol face east or north, placed in the north-east corner, though some set idols facing west so the devotee faces east. Avoid the south.

2. Which side should Lakshmi be placed beside Ganesha?

From your seat for puja, Ganesha is usually placed on your left and Lakshmi on your right. A smaller tradition reverses this.

3. Which direction should the first diya face on Diwali?

A common guideline is to light the first diya in the north-east, then place others in the north and south-east.

4. What is the best direction for the main entrance for Diwali?

North, east and north-east are considered most auspicious, though other directions are fine, and you can still follow the entrance tips.

5. Where should Lakshmi charan be placed?

At the threshold or along the path to the puja area, with the footprints facing inward, towards the home.

6. Can I place Lakshmi-Ganesh in the bedroom?

Vastu sources generally advise against bedrooms, bathrooms, garages and spaces below a staircase. A clean, raised spot in a living or puja area is better.

7. Do I need to follow Vastu exactly for Diwali?

No. Vastu is traditional guidance, and a clean, peaceful home with sincere prayer matters most, especially if your layout can't match every rule.
