How to Read Your Kundli: A Complete Beginner's Guide

How to Read Your Kundli: A Complete Beginner's Guide

In Indian culture, a Kundli is much more than a piece of paper; it is a lifelong companion. Families analyse it before planning naming ceremonies, weddings, and businesses, and even making major financial decisions. A Kundli, also known as a Janam Kundli or birth chart, is a cosmic picture of the sky taken at the exact moment you were born, with every planet, zodiac sign and house in that moment.

To make a correct Kundli, you need to know your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. This article shows you how to read a Kundli step-by-step, how to find your Lagna, read the 12 houses, understand Yogas and Doshas and use all of this information to make real-life decisions like getting married. There is a separate Hindi section at the end.

What Is a Kundli?

A Kundli, which can also be spelt Kundali, is a 12-house chart that shows the position of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It shows the Sun, Moon and nine planets (Navagraha) across 12 zodiac signs (Rashis) and 12 life houses. This is the basic idea behind Vedic astrology.

Your Kundli is unique because of three sections of information: your date of birth (which tells you where the planets are), your exact time of birth (which informs about your Lagna, which varies every two hours) and your place of birth (which tells you the local horizon for Ascendant calculation). The Lagna, which is the most important part, can't be found without an accurate birth time, which makes the whole house structure unreliable.

There are two types of Kundlis: the North Indian diamond (kite) chart and the South Indian fixed-grid chart. The information in both is the same, and only the layout is different.

The Five Key Components of a Kundli

Component Sanskrit Term What It Represents

Ascendant Lagna The zodiac sign that rises on the eastern horizon at birth defines the first house and sets up the whole chart.

12 Houses Bhavas There are 12 parts to the chart, each of which controls a different part of life.

Planets Grahas / Navagraha 9 heavenly bodies spread out over the 12 houses

Zodiac Signs Rashis 12 signs (from Aries to Pisces) that change how planets act

Planetary Periods Dashas A 120-year cycle that shows when each planet's effects will show up

How to Read Your Kundli in 7 Steps

There are many steps to reading a Kundli chart. Begin with the Lagna and houses, then add the positions of the planets, look for strengths, Yogas and Doshas and finally use the Dasha timeline to figure out when to act.

Step 1: Figure out what your Lagna (Ascendant) is. Check out the first house. The number inside tells you what your Lagna sign is: 1 = Aries, 2 = Taurus and so on. From here, every house is counted. You can't be sure of the Lagna without knowing the exact time of your birth.

Step 2: Read the 12 Houses in Order. Count the houses from the Lagna in a counter-clockwise (North Indian) or clockwise (South Indian) direction. The full table below shows that each house controls a different area of life.

Step 3: Find out which planets are in which houses. Each planet in a house gives that part of life more energy. Empty houses aren't bad; they get energy from aspects. A stellium is when more than one planet is in the same house. This makes that life domain stronger.

Step 4: Look for your Lagna Lord. The Lagnesh is the most important planet in your chart and is the ruling planet of your Lagna sign. It shows strength and stability when it is in Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) or Trikona (1st, 5th, or 9th) houses.

Step 5: Check the strength of the planets. In its exaltation sign, each planet is at its strongest and in its debilitation sign, it is at its weakest. Aries is an excellent location for the Sun, but Libra is an undesirable location for it. Cancer is a favourable place for Jupiter, but Capricorn is a problematic place for it. Planets that are exalted do their best work, while planets that are weakened may have trouble.

Step 6: Find the important Yogas and Doshas. Yogas are good combinations that promise good results. Doshas are hard to deal with. Mangal Dosha, which means Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from Lagna or Moon, is the most talked about.

Step 7: Use the Dasha System to figure out when. The Dasha shows you when the chart's potential comes to life. Find out what your current Mahadasha (major period) and Antardasha (sub-period) are. The Dasha of the planet that is relevant usually brings about the events that are shown in the birth chart.

How to Read a Kundli for Marriage

In India, the most common reason people look at a Kundli is to get married. A full reading looks at four layers.

Step 1: Look at the 7th house. If Jupiter or Venus is in this house, it means a happy marriage. If Saturn or Mars is in this house, it means problems or delays. Look at the strength and position of the lord of the 7th house as well.

Step 2: Look at Venus and Jupiter. Venus is the sign of love in all charts. Jupiter is the husband for women. Make sure Venus or Jupiter is in a good spot, not too close to the Sun (which would make it combust), and not affected by any bad aspects.

Step 3: The Navamsa (D9) chart. The 7th house of the Navamsa shows how deep the marriage is. Vargottama is a planet that is very strong in both the birth chart (D1) and the Navamsa (D9).

Step 4: Look for Mangal Dosha. Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from Lagna, Moon, or Venus makes Mangal Dosha.
