Indian Festivals 2025
Let’s first understand the structure of the Indian calendar to understand it better. Also known as the Shalivahana Shaka Calendar or Shaka Calendar, the Indian calendar is heavily based on the luni-solar system, which has its local variations while following the 12 months and 365 days rule. According to the Indian calendar, the names of the month change, and because there is a large population of people who don’t speak English regularly, the preference is usually given to the Indian variation to identify Hindu festivals in 2025.
So while the National holidays such as Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti remain unchanged in the Indian calendar, the religious festivals, their dates, timings, etc., are based on the movement of the Sun and Moon.
The position of the Moon and stars in the sky are acknowledged by the astrologers to determine the dates of the festivals in the calendar accurately. For instance, the festival of Eid is solely based on moon sightings. This movement also helps to predict horoscopes, panchangs, and other important calculations. Following are the months adapted as per the lunisolar calendar:
Chaitra
Vaishakha
Jyeshtha
Ashadha
Shravana
Bhadra
Ashwin
Kartika
Agrahayana
Pausha
Magha
Phalguna
Lunar Calendar
The lunar calendar is followed for most of the Indian festivals. It is based on the location of the moon in the sky. However, the Shaka calendar has only half occupied by the lunar calendar. The solar calendar is required to complete the whole universe. Therefore, it is essential to combine both calendars to get the final Shaka calendar.
The movement of the Moon becomes crucial in determining festivals like Shivaratri and Karwa Chauth, among others. National Sanskrit Day is also an important day in India, which is marked by moon sightings.
Solar Calendar
Even though a solar month is made up of 30 days, the start of the month does not coincide when compared to the Gregorian calendar. Hence, to make it easy and for your reference, we have shared dates corresponding with the Gregorian calendar. They describe the Hindu months and their Gregorian dates based on the placement of the Sun. Here it is:
Chaitra – March 14
Vaisakha – April 13
Jyestha – May 14
Asadha – June 14
Sravana – July 16
Bhadrapada – August 16
Asvina – September 16
Kartika – October 17
Margashirsha – November 16
Pausa – December 15
Magha – January 14
Phalguna – Feb 12, 2025
So, with the combination of the lunar calendar and solar calendar, we get the Shaka calendar, which also becomes (or is popularised as) the Indian Festival Calendar.
